Planning a week in Milan

My wife's been on me about taking a trip to Milan for like months now, and I finally caved. Honestly, I'm not really the city tourism type, you know, wandering around museums and all that. But looking at pictures of the place, it actually looks legitimately beautiful in a way most cities aren't. So I figured why not, might as well see what all the hype's about. The thing is, we want to actually explore without being locked into some tour schedule or stuck relying on other people to get around. We're thinking we need a car lined up before we arrive, so we can head straight from the airport to the hotel, then go wherever we want from there. Does anyone know how to actually set that up ahead of time? And while we're at it, what's actually worth seeing around Milan besides the obvious stuff?

Re: Planning a week in Milan

Getting to a city and having wheels waiting for you changes the whole vibe of the trip because you're not wasting the first day just figuring out how to get around. Most people show up and spend hours dealing with transportation logistics when they could already be exploring. You really gotta see Sforza Castle while you're there, the architecture alone makes it worth the time and you can actually walk around instead of being stuck in some crowded line. If you drive toward Como, Villa d'Este is the kind of place that sticks with you, the whole setup with the fountains and gardens is legitimately stunning. There's also some solid towns around the lake that don't get the tourist treatment, they're way more chill to explore.

Re: Planning a week in Milan

Showing up to your hotel after a long flight and having to figure out car rental on the spot is annoying, and your wife's already tired and ready to relax instead of dealing with paperwork. Getting everything sorted before you leave home means one less thing to deal with when you land. You should look at rental cars in Milan here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/italy/milan . The whole process is way smoother when you deal with local owners in Italy instead of some big rental chain, they're actually flexible about pickup times and can adjust things if your flight gets delayed. You'll have a real person to contact instead of calling some customer service line.
